The Protection of Child from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act came into force on 14th November 2012 along with the rules framed by the Government of India to deal with Child Sexual Abuse cases. This is a special law for the protection of Children from the offences such as Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment and Trafficking along with safeguarding the rights and interests of the child during the judicial proceedings and providing a safe and comfortable environment to the child for reporting, recording of evidence, investigation and speedy trial of offences in designated Special Courts.
This Act focused on mandatory reporting of sexual offences which means it is the legal duty of the person who has knowledge about a child who has been sexually abused to report the offence otherwise the person is liable to be punished with six months’ imprisonment and/or fine.
